Hail Storm in Fort Worth and Arlington

Kyle Davis

If your home was affected by a hail storm, here are a few tips to prepare you for what comes next.

1. Solicitors are coming

Nothing draws more door-to-door solicitors than a hail storm. If you would rather not be disturbed, put a hand-written note on the door. The store-bought “No Solicitors” sign rarely works.

2. You do not have to move quickly

Creating a sense of urgency is a tactic salespeople use to get you to sign up fast.

3. Be cautious about waived deductibles

Most contractors will tell you they can waive your deductible. They have no idea what your deductible amount is, so how can they waive it? And are they willing to commit fraud or cut corners to accomplish it? There is a right way to do business without sacrificing quality.

4. Is the roofer licensed?

Check with RCAT. Texas does not require licensing, but many legitimate contractors are licensed by the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas.

5. Check the NTRCA list

The NTRCA also has a good list of contractors. These are local to North Texas and cannot be members without proper insurance.

6. Check the Better Business Bureau of Fort Worth

Any business can be a member, so the rating alone can be misleading. Read the reviews and look for negative ones.

7. Angie’s List

Another good tool for researching the roofing contractors you are considering. Reviews of contractors are listed throughout.

8. General contractor or roofer?

Many general contractors specialize in roofing but can also help with fence, gutter and window damage, siding, and skylights. Hiring one simplifies how many tradespeople you deal with. Most roofing-only companies still subcontract their installers rather than employing them, especially in residential work.

9. Insurance

General liability provides some protection, but make sure it is valid. Get a copy of the insurance certificate and call the provider to verify coverage. You can also request a waiver of liability as another layer of protection.

10. Your insurance claim

In most cases the insurance company pays fair market value for all damage, so have every item repaired or replaced. Unfortunately it is common for roofers to cut corners by leaving the old felt on, or not replacing flashing and vents, even though those were paid for. Many will tell you to leave your gutters unrepaired to offset your deductible. That is a bad practice, and if they invoice the insurance company saying the work was done, it is insurance fraud. In most cases there are plenty of funds available to have everything repaired properly.
